I am intrigued with the texture of paper or un-stretched canvas when it is worked by layering, scratching, adding and removing. The surfaces become more three dimensional as the edges ripple. Like aging skin, the surface bears physical signs of this process, similar to life’s circumstances, and gains depth and subtlety because of it.
The honing process, the process of change, the gradual removal of that which is not necessary, fascinates me. The subtle suggestions left after the removal of images are almost like remembrances of past experiences.
I relate to the Abstract Expressionistic attitude that incorporates both a conscious marking as well as accidental scuffs, stains and drips. My interest is to depict the specific of the everyday through non-specific abstract means . |
